Speaker: Gloria Hilderbrand
Gloria Hilderbrand, one of the founders of the Southern Quilt Trail in Georgia, has lived all of her 72 years in the Powder Springs area. In 1958 she married the man she blames for causing her to fall in love with old country things. Her passion has always been old baskets and quilts, buying anything she could afford, which has landed her quite a personal collection. She became an antiques dealer, and for over 40 years traveled all over the U.S. doing shows. About 18 years ago she settled down with a shop in Marietta. Shortly, she met Diane Reese, and together they opened Country Store of Seven springs in Powder Springs, which has been in operation for 15 years. About 6-7 years ago, Joe Sutton, the florist across the street, gave Gloria and Della an article about a quilt trail in Ohio. From this, Gloria and Diane were inspired to create the Southern Quilt Trail in Georgia, and about 18 months later the first quilt patterns appeared in Powder Springs. The Trail has spread to include other surrounding counties with the hopes that it will continue to grow in both scope and popularity.

Speaker: Diane Reese
Diane Reese, one of the founders of the Southern Quilt Trail in Georgia, is a native Georgian who has lived in the Atlanta area all her life. Diane has always loved antiques, buying and selling them for the last 20 years. While learning her way around antiques, she discovered a love for old quilts and learning their patterns and history. About 15 years ago, along with her business partner, Gloria Hilderbrand, Diane opened an antique store in Powder Springs, GA. Through the store operation, and involvement in the city and business associations, Diane and Gloria worked hard at trying new things to bring people into their downtown. Joe Sutton, the florist across the street, gave Gloria and Diane an article about a quilt trail in Ohio, suggesting they try something like it in Georgia, and so they did! The Southern Quilt Trail not only operates in Powder Springs, but in five neighboring counties. Diane has been married for 31 years, has 2 children, a son and a daughter.

Speaker: Judy Rowell
Judy Rowell has lived in Bowdon all of her 46 married years and is the fourth generation  to live on her grandmother’s family farm.  It was her grandmother, Myrtie Smith Traylor, and her aunt, Louise, who taught her to quilt on a frame suspended from the ceiling in the “front room” of their house.  For a wedding present they gave her a fan quilt, and when they died, Judy inherited the quilts in their home, some of which date from around the early part of the 20th century. She and her husband, Jim, are active in the Bowdon Area Historical Society, and they encouraged BAHS to sponsor the two quilt squares which brought Bowdon into the Southern Quilt trail. Bowdon now has four squares on the Trail and is encouraging other businesses and individuals to add to that number.
